Dale Jr. leans toward Hendrick? The efforts to sign #ale Earnhardt Jr. to a NASCAR driving contract for 2008 and beyond has reached a critical point, and the top two teams on Earnhardts list are the Chevrolet teams owned by Richard Childress and Rick Hendrick, according to men familiar with the negotiations. Earnhardt today is leaning toward a deal with Hendrick [NOTE: where would Earnhardt go? HMS has four Cup teams and all three drivers signed for a couple more years, unless some sort of deal with Haas CNC Racing or Ginn Racing would be worked out], largely because of Hendricks very strong engine program, sources here said yesterday. Earnhardt and veteran crew chief Tony Eury Jr., his cousin and close confidante as well as the man who has led him to many of his 17 Cup victories, have talked with both the Hendrick and Childress camps in recent weeks about the positives and negatives each team owner would have to offer, sources said yesterday. And Eury will have a major voice in the decision, because Earnhardts primary goal now, at age 32, is to win a championship.
Wow... can you imagine if Dale Jr went to race for Hendrick Motorsports? This would be the headline for the decade..... Could the unthinkable happen? Would Jr. risk losing legions of fans? Exactly how many would he lose though?
I really hope that if he goes anywhere else it would be to RCR. However, if he did happen to go to Hendrick, I'd still follow him. It's not Hendrick Motorsports that I dislike, it's the drivers. Hendrick is the strongest racing organization out there, and it would be the best place for him to win a championship. I would not like his teammates though.... I dislike Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch. My guess is that if Hendrick took him, he would have to eventually get rid of the #25 team.
RCR would be the best fit for Jr. though. They have made leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. A fourth team with Jr. in it would almost make them equals with Hendrick. Plus who wouldn't love to see Jr. racing for his father's own team? Would it be in the #3 though? Who knows.....
Well looks like those rumors were dismissed the same day.... Here's the latest:
Dale Jr. & Truex to JR Motorsports? Dave Moody reported on Wednesday afternoon's Sirius Speedway that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will announce tomorrow at JR Motorsports, that both he and #1-Martin Truex, Jr. will drive in the Nextel Cup Series for JR Motorsports in 2008. Hendrick Motorsports will provide engines for the team. A press conference is reportedly planned for 11:00am/et at JR Motorsports headquarters.(5-9-2007)
Well I hope Teresa is proud of herself.... Paul Menard will be it. DEI has no choice but to merge with RYR now and most likely they will be running Fords.
I heard about this press conference and it was stated that JR. Motorsports is giving it....that leans that DEI is out. All this is speculation until tomorrow. But I really don't see RCR in the equation at all. The family connection is no longer there. Hendrick seems plausible but they aren't giving up that #25 team, means to much to them sentimentally. Ginn? nah, why go through all this just to go to a team like that? Jr. Motorsports with Hendrick power? could work, but I don't see how Truex gets out of his contract with DEI. Budweiser follows but what about Menards, Bass Pro, Wrangler and all the rest? of course, this still could end up with Jr. with majority ownership of DEI. All shall be revealed tomorrow.
Just two days ago, during testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Earnhardt complained DEI could not compete with Hendrick particularly in the Car of Tomorrow. Hendrick drivers have won all four COT races this season, which Earnhardt chalked up to the resources that team has devoted to the program.
"They've got a lot of resources. They've got a great company, two, three really good cars every week, great crew chiefs. They've really got the package right now," Earnhardt said Monday. "Their cars, they handle pretty good. They're getting through the center of the corner better with the COT, and that's just because they test the hell out of it.
"I hear rumors they got Max Papis and road race guys at Sonoma testing and testing and testing and testing."
