Mexico City dropped from '09 Nationwide schedule

NASCAR's Nationwide Series race in Mexico will be replaced on next year's schedule by another American race, The Charlotte Observer reported Sunday.

"This was never about a single event. The big idea was to strengthen motorsports in Mexico," NASCAR vice president Robbie Weis told The Observer.

Weis would not say which track would add the race, but The Observer cited sources saying it could go to Iowa, a track seven-eighths of a mile long that already hosts IndyCar and NASCAR Camping World East series events.

Officials with the Iowa Speedway say they're excited that the track might be in line to fill an unexpected opening on the Nationwide Series.

The president of the Iowa Speedway, Jerry Jauron, said he hopes Iowa can fill that gap.

Nationwide Series senior manager of communications Tracey Judd said NASCAR hopes to have its 2009 schedules set soon but did not specify what tracks may be considered to replace Mexico City.

A NASCAR race could attract thousands to Newton, Iowa, for the event.

The NASCAR Corona Mexico series ran its first points race this season during the April weekend the Nationwide series held its race in Mexico City.

I'm sure a lot of teams will be happy about this. I don't think too many really wanted to trek all the way down to Mexico.

I kind of wish they would have kept it on the schedule. I love watching those road races. But, then again with the price of everything going up I'm sure the teams will be happy not to go down there to Mexico.

it was a great race, but the weekend was a logistical nightmare every year......what I found the most entertaining was Helton and the boys would tell the teams that they should all drive down in a convoy together and if they got separated from the group, Nascar would not be held accountable!

Just goes to show that eventhough, they may be our neighbors, that country is a world away from ours.
