lou and the rest of the league! i want to make a proposal to send an exact copy of the league championship trophy to karen smith's family! i will make a donation and invite the rest of the league to do the same! i want yall to know this has been on my mind and my heart all year long! her son in response to a letter i sent, sent me a membership card that karen smith had purchased into the jeff gordon fan club! i keep it in my wallet and it means the world to me! they are a very good family and i would like to do this from our league to let karen's family know we still think of them! i would also like to name the race that is close to her death anniversery the karen smith memorial race! p.s her son sent me some pictures of karen and a nice letter that i really enjoyed!
Troy, that's great that her family kept in touch with you. If you can, you should scan the photos of her to upload to the site.
We will honor Karen each year with the race that we dedicated to her this year. That's the Brickyard 400.
As for the trophy, the cost is $31.95 plus $10.32 for shipping.... at least that's what it was last year. Shipping may be up a little bit, but it cost me a total of $42.27.
unfortunately I can not contribute anything extra since I pay out a lot at the end of the year... Trophy cost, money pit segment, championship fund, streak to the finish prize, plus Christmas shopping too. However, if anyone did want to contribute anything, that would be fine.
will you e-mail everyone and let them know ? i will make up the difference and send it to you by mail, so as soon as you can get a price on trophy and shipping! i will send my membership fee for next year at the same time!
I included it in the weekly email and already heard from one member that he said he would donate towards it. Hopefully we might hear from some more at well.
I was thinking what we can put on it...... I came up with "In Memory of Karen Smith" "Forever a Champion" and Lucky Dog Racing on the bottom.
Anything extra that we collect in donations will be donated either to Victory Junction Gang or Cancer Research in Karen's name.
You can thank Robert Butterfield for his generosity. When Robert sent his money in for next season, he included an extra amount to cover the WHOLE cost of shipping an extra trophy out to Karen's family.
However, as I said.... anything extra we collect, we can send to VJG, Cancer Research or even directly to Karen's family along with the trophy.
Troy, if you want I can ship the trophy to you so you can mail it to Karen's family and included whatever else you want with it. It would probably be better coming from you instead of me shipping it directly there from the manufacterer. We'll work it out by the end of the season. Heck, you might have two trophies coming to you anyway.

I thought it was great that you guys thought of it so it was my pleasure.... I know I didn't know her personally but it FELT right, I am honored to do it and thankful I am in the position to do it.
My only wish is that everyone who was planning to send anything for this, please continue to donate so anything over and above can go to Karen's family or the 2 chairties named above.
