Michael Jackson, the self-anointed "King of Pop" who revolutionized music but whose legacy was marred by allegations of child molestation and bizarre behavior, died after suffering cardiac arrest Thursday. He was 50 years old.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was called to Jackson's residence at 12:26 p.m. P.T., according to the Los Angeles Times. Paramedics performed CPR on Jackson, who was not breathing when they arrived at his home. He was rushed to LA Medical Center, just six miles from his home.
"For a long time he was unquestionably the most famous person on the planet," Jed Hilly, the executive director of the Americana Music Assocation, told ABCNews.com.
"The word he spoke with the greatest emphasis was the 'More!' that he exclaimed when I asked if he could still do all his famous moves and hit all those notes at the age of 50," said Connelly of his August 2008 phone interview with Jackson.
Connelly asked Jackson if he had received his AARP membership, a question that garnered a laugh from the star.
"In an all-too-short life that in so many ways was filled with enigmatic emotions, or troubling ones, his laugh sounded fresh, clear and altogether genuine," said Connelly. "If only there had been more of those."
Jackson's death came less than a month before the start of a scheduled series of so-called comeback concerts. From July 13 to March 6, 2010, Jackson was scheduled to perform 50 sold-out concerts at London's O2 Arena.
Jackson is survived by his three children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.
Fans last heard from Jackson during a press conference in London last March, where he assured about 2,000 fans that his upcoming concert would be his "final curtain call."
"I just want to say that these will be my final show performances in London," he said to the screaming crowd. "This will be it. When I say this is it, this will be it."
Shocking news today, first with Farrah Fawcett, now this comes out of the blue. One of the greatest entertainers ever has left us, this is right on the level of Elvis Presley dying.
Not wishing any one bad but putting Jackson up with Elvis please. sure he made a lot of money but he will always be a little freak to me. When first heard the news my first thought was I hope people don't let this overshadow Farrah's suffering and death. I have a new found respect for Ryan O also.
Well you may have your own opinions about him, but you can't deny the global impact that he had on music. yes, the only person that you could compare him to is Elvis Presley, maybe Madonna. You may like his music, you may hate his music, you may hate all of the weird going-on's with his life, but hands down he was one of the greatest entertainers ever, and nobody will ever match him.
Beyond that, he was by far a recluse, and thus the media retaliated against him. Now, I don't know if the stories are true or false, but look how many times media have shunned people who don't give into their whims and they paint whatever picture they like.
One thing to ponder is how that British 'journalist' tried to portray Jackson as a nutjob a couple of years ago and then two weeks later, Michael showed his own COMPLETE tapes of the interview and basically outed the poor schmuck.
Yeah, I'm not sure when you grew up John, but I was in 7th or 8th grade when Thriller was out. Somebody stole my Bad cassette on the school bus and I was devestated. Hated the actions later, but during his prime he was something else.
I grew up with Michael..we are the same age. I enjoyed his music and videos, but the extra stuff was overbearing. I dont have a problem comparing him to Elvis. Both were entertainers..but Michael was more of a World Wide Entertainer. Besides...ever watch an Elvis presley movie? Ughhhhhhh

I grew up in the 60's Gary with rock and roll not pop. I still say you diddle little boys it trumps any thing else! Hell he is broke from paying of the parents to stay out of jail. I guess we will agree to disagree.
I remember the Thriller video scared the hell out of me, lol. I think I was 5 at the time, but after a few times, I loved that video. MJ should be remembered for his music, but all the crazy stuff that took place will reflect badly on his legacy.
