BIG TV News - NASCAR declines TV option with Fox after 2006: NASCAR declined an option to extend its TV contract with Fox Sports past the 2006 racing season, said Dick Glover, NASCAR's vice president of broadcasting and new media. Fox, NBC and Turner Sports are in the fifth year of a six-year, $2.4 billion contract to televise NASCAR races. NASCAR had to decide by May 31 whether to pick up its option with Fox through 2008. Glover said the move was made to end all of its television contracts simultaneously. "All it means is we've synced up the agreements with our broadcast partners," Glover said. "We've said all along we'd like to renew with all of them. That hasn't changed." Glover didn't disclose the size of the option. "Our contract runs through 2006, and we are continuing discussions with NASCAR about a new deal," Fox spokesman Dan Bell said. Former ABC Sports Executive Steve Solomon said ABC and ESPN are possible bidders for NASCAR's rights when the current agreements expire after the 2006 season.(Tennessean)(6-4-2005)
You know ESPN is going all out to get the tv package. I'm wondering what they are offering to top Fox's bid.
I think Fox will still pick up the first half of the season like they usually do, they have deep pockets for sports. ABC/ESPN still have the NBA contract that I think runs through 2007 and NBC just got a football package so they might not want to pick up Nascar again.
I'm rooting for it to stay on FOX, I have always like fox the best. ESPN did do an excellent job. Kenny Mane was very very funny. Just as long as they don't get stupid and put it on the speed channel or spike TV.
It can stay on Fox, but that Chris Meyers and his Hollywood Hellhole have got to GO. I can not stand that dude one stinking bit!!!!!!!!!! When they have a caution and his face comes on, i change the channel.
Speed Channel i believe is owned by NBC so they would have to bid for them to be there.
I forgot who owns Spike, but someone does.
ABC is my first choice..........but that is going to mean alot of ESPN broadcasts. Bring it back to the good ol' days when CBS knew what they were talking about.
it sounds like they want one network to take all of the schedule......more money that way (broadcaster can claim exclusive rights and all)
I'm a big fan of fox and the commentators (gee DW is my hero) I just don't want to see it go strickly to cable channels. I like it better on air tv that way when we go out in the boat or go camping I can take the little 13in and listen to it. I guess i won't mind more radio stations broadcasting the race either. Some years ago I could go to the lake sit on tail of my station wagon and put the speakers in the back listen to the race and fish my butt off. Now tell me thats not living.
I still have to say MRN has the best coverage over all the networks.....through the disadvantage of having no visual, they have found a way to turn that into a plus and you get a better since of whats going on pretty much through the whole field.
plus, its great when i get stuck doing yard work on sundays.....just blast the stereo and everyone is happy!
