CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Waltrip's penalties for allegedly making an inappropriate gesture during a race last month were overturned Wednesday.
NASCAR had accused Waltrip of gesturing during the Sept. 18 race in New Hampshire after Robby Gordon threw his helmet at Waltrip following an accident involving the drivers. Waltrip was fined $10,000, docked 25 points and placed on probation until the end of the year.
Waltrip denied making the gesture and appealed to the three-member National Stock Car Racing Commission. The panel said two members found TV footage "inconclusive," and the commission then voted to rescind the penalties.
This, I think, was a good move. Waltrip never really did anything at New Hampshire to deserve a penalty. People wreck each other all the time.... and that one was just a wreck.. and he got in trouble for "flipping Robby off"... uhm... how the heck do they know? They have no close ups... I mean Mike ducked for gods sake! He wouldnt go and flip him off. haha
I knew as soon as I saw that incident, that Waltrip did nothing wrong. That's why I was wondering where the heck that penalty came from in the first place.
At least NASCAR did something right for a change and overturned it.
