What's everyone think about this? I think it is the end of the NASCAR we know and came to love. I liked it better when they raced real cars and the manufactures had to produce so many of a model to use them. Even now the only difference is the nose and trunk. That being said I think NASCAR is going down a different road with these cars and maybe they should change the name. Stockcar is so far removed from the car of tomorrow. Time will tell! Lets get some more opinions in here.
I think its a good Idea, Any time there is change there is going to be good and bad. Like Felix Sabates said its still going to cost millions for teams to change over. Yes, when you got 3 or 4 teams with 20 or 30 cars its going to cost. But for the smaller teams that exist or teams wanting to get in, this will be a good thing. Imagine being able to use a car at Bristol and then use that same car at Talladega. We have seen that the teams that can stable 30 or 40 cars and grab up all the sponsors are going to win time and time again. You got to admit that it would be nice to see a Cinderella team take the Cup again (Alan Kulwicki). The way things are now you can place your bets now and odds are good that the 2006 champion will come from Roush, Gibbs, or Hendrick. One of the reasons I have loved Nascar Racing over the years was, anyone could win. There was a year when in the first 15 races there were 15 different winners, I cant tell you the year but with a little research I could come up with it. I can remember talking with friends about racing in the late 80s and how Indy could never hold a candle to Stockcar because Indy was high dollar, if you had the money you had the fast cars. We are losing teams every year because of cost, Alot of teams that you think are Independent are actuality dependent on the 3 big teams. Without them they would be teams being knock out by cost. Your looking at going from fieldfillers to races with 30 cars in them, Nascar has already said it will drop 3 Nascar divisions because the amount of cars in these races were droping off because cost was to high to compete. The car of tommorow might not be the fix Nascar needs, but at least their trying to level the playing field.
Thanks for the thoughts Nathan. We do agree in principle. We both liked it better when any race was up for grabs. If you turn out to be right i will change my vote . Maybe we can get some one car teams like Rudd runing again. Poor Dave Marcus is still trying to beat the odds.
Stock car racing just isn't anymore. I'm afraid we won't see it again on the big circuits either. But then again, the days of leaving your house unlocked, a phone call costing a dime, or smoking in public are all long gone as well. It's just a sign of the times.
But the question was whether or not the 'Car of Tommorrow' was a good idea. I think it will make better racing for two reasons. The cars are bulkier and slower thus negating the engineering aspect somewhat. Also, since the cars are safer, along with SAFER Barriers, will cause some drivers to take more chances for the good or bad, but it will be more entertaining.
