It's a shame this story has to bigger than it should be. NASCAR is the one sport where the race barrier has yet to be broken. I applaud Bill Lester, but jeeze.... this guy must be under a lot of pressure. If he does good or crappy in his first race, he can either kickstart or stall any other minorities in the sport.
The bad thing is, Bill Lester is the only black full time driver in NASCAR's top three series. While Bill is a good qualifier for the Truck Series, he has yet to establish himself as a legitimate racer because he doesn't have the finishes to back it up.
Because of the whole NASCAR diversity program, they want to get a minority in a Cup ride right away, and Bill is the only one they have. If Bill was white and had the same record that he does in the Truck Series, there is no way he would be in a Cup ride right now.
I like Bill, I think he has a great attitude and seems like a nice guy, I just think he is being exploited by NASCAR because of his color. Look, we have a colored driver, and here he is!
What's the big deal? Oh look we have an African-American driving a race car. Where is the outrage from Native Americans? That protest should be right around the corner.
I don't stare at the TV during a basketball game and say "where's the white playes?"
I don't shake my fist when the NFL won't hire a Latino or Asian coach.
I don't change the channel because the NHL has only a handful of African-Americans playing.
Even major league baseball the other day was crying because they are losing the African-American player.
Just last month during the olympics the media was falling all over each other because we had an African-American win in Speed Skating.
Tiger Woods and VJ Sing are fantastic golf players not because of their skin color but because how hard they work at it.
I love sports but I hate the race card, it doesn't belong in sports. It drives me nuts. I think it disrespects the athletes already playing. Maybe African-Americans just want to play football and basketball. Maybe white Canadians just want to play hockey. Who's to say that there is minority's playing the sports but they just aren't good enough to make it to the professional level.
