More Danica Talk

There's been rumors over the last year, but looks like the talk is heating up again about Danica Patrick heading to NASCAR:

JOLIET, Ill. -- Danica Patrick's father is exploring the possibility of the popular Indy Racing League driver moving to NASCAR as soon as next year, the Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.

The Sentinel reported that T.J. Patrick, who has managed Danica Patrick's career since childhood, was in exploratory talks with some NASCAR teams at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.

"I'm trying to get her here [into NASCAR]," T.J. Patrick told the Sentinel.

T.J. and Bev Patrick, who formerly lived in Roscoe, Ill., attended NASCAR's USG Sheetrock 400 because "we've had some inquiries" from NASCAR teams, T.J. Patrick told the newspaper.

The Sentinel reported the couple was in the Nextel Cup garage area as guests of Roush Racing, which fields drivers Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray and runs Fords on the Nextel Cup circuit.

Danica Patrick's contract with Rahal-Letterman Racing team ends after this season and the Patricks are negotiating with other IRL teams as well as NASCAR teams, the Sentinel reported. The newspaper said team co-owner Bobby Rahal declined comment through a spokesman.

Patrick, who became IRL's most recognizable driver by leading part of the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and finishing fourth, has yet to enjoy similar success in 2006, as Rahal-Letterman has endured a frustrating season.

Rahal-Letterman, which enjoyed a power advantage by running Honda engines in 2005, lost that advantage when the entire league shifted to Hondas for 2006. It was the last team to use a Panoz chassis and struggled to adjust when it finally switched to a Dallara, used by every other team in IRL, after the Indy 500. And the team lost one of its drivers when Paul Dana was killed during practice before the IRL's season-opening race in Homestead, Fla.

Roush Racing, huh? My guess is that she would start out in the Busch Series full time, a few select Cup rides, then full time in 2008 if it happened.

Well let's see... Matt Kenseth signed to 2010.

Jamie McMurray to 2007  hmmm....

Greg Biffle to 2008..... hmm, again....

Todd Kluever will be replacing Martin next year, so I think Roush is gonna want to hang on to the rookie for a least a few years.

Carl Edwards is signed to the end of this year, but he's not going anywhere.

Best bet would be replacing Greg Biffle in the #16 in 2008. Now wouldn't that be the next big story in NASCAR?!   Jared Folgel is already salivating thinking about those Danica Patrick Subway commericals.

She needs to do something.

Lately she's been lucky to beat 8 or 10 IRL drivers.

That means she beats 40% of the field and would mean about a 25th place finish in NASCAR.

And we all thought Erin Crocker was a project......

Well, financially this would be a great move for Danica Patrick but in regards to her career, I think it would be a huge hit in the long run. Sure, the first year that she's in the Cup Series, she'll be a big news story but if she's not competitive she will drop off the radar very quickly.

Last year she was all over the place but because she hasn't won a race in Indy Car yet and hasn't been all that competitive on the track, the hype isn't there this year. However, she does have a fan base there. If she leaves some of the fans will follow her, but not everyone.

Will she have the talent to race with the big guys in the Cup Series week after week? I personally do not think so. I think she will become another Erin Crocker and end up racing in the Busch Series or maybe the Truck Series. Either of those series aren't at the level of Indy Racing, so she would disappear. However, if it doesn't work out she could always make a return to the Indy Series, so at least she has that going for her.

It's interesting though... we keep hearing what her father says, who is also her manager, but we haven't heard anything from her yet regarding these latest rumors.
