That was uncalled for.

I was glad to see Carl Edwards give him a little pay back.

One wonders if that Gordon incident made NASCAR more open to throwing the black flag on aggressive drivers now. I'm sure they heard a lot of flack about that.

Saw this article on Foxsports:

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Tony Stewart is many things, but the Emily Post of NASCAR etiquette is most certainly not one of them.

Stewart wants to preach a give-and-take attitude on the race track. Yet when it comes time to practice it, NASCAR's champion only wants to take as much as he can get.

He longs for a garage leader like the late Dale Earnhardt, who made it his job to teach ****y, young drivers a thing or two about respect. But instead of stepping up and adopting Earnhardt's approach, the two-time champion wants to be the judge, jury and executioner on the race track.

That's what he was at Pocono Raceway after rookie Clint Bowyer pinched him into the wall very early into Sunday's race. After waving a menacing fist out his window, Stewart slid back into Bowyer to start a chain-reaction crash that collected Carl Edwards.

It earned Stewart a one-lap aggressive driving penalty, and the action almost certainly eliminated Bowyer and Edwards from championship contention. Both drivers were fighting mad after the race, but Bowyer couldn't get close enough to Stewart to do anything and - much to the dismay of garage insiders - Edwards thought better of it.

"If it weren't for the respect of the sport and the people watching and his team, he'd be out there bleeding right now," fumed Edwards, who was also penalized one lap for his retaliatory spin of Stewart.

If there's one thing that's certain, it's that the portly Stewart doesn't want any part of Edwards and the six-pack abs that landed him on the cover of several magazines.  (lol!)

What's not so clear is who and what Stewart is thinking these days.

As the defending Nextel Cup champion, the platform is Stewart's to do and say what he wants and he's repeatedly used it this season. But his messages are so mixed that he's struggling to keep his audience.

His dire warning at Daytona that someone was going to be killed if NASCAR didn't curb aggressive driving certainly caught everyone's attention, including the sanctioning body, which implemented a policing system.

But Stewart was the very first violator of the new guidelines, intentionally crashing into Matt Kenseth during the season-opening race.

He then spent the first quarter of the season feuding with Kyle Busch, whom he accused of being too wild on the race track and tuning out Stewart's veteran's advice.

And just last week, the driver who wants everyone to give-and-take on the race track refused to give Ryan Newman an inch of space to pass him.

So he says one thing, then stubbornly - and often out of anger - does the other.

"He's one of the best race car drivers I've ever raced against," four-time champion Jeff Gordon said. "The only thing Tony has going against him is he's got a little bit of a temper and sometimes that gets the best of him."

In fairness to Stewart, everything he's angry about is true.

There is little give-and-take on the race track, with drivers fighting fender-to-fender for every position. And NASCAR has shifted its focus toward younger drivers who lack the Cup experience, etiquette and respect for the veterans still out on the track.

Add in the pressure to make the Chase for the championship - the spotlighted 10-race postseason where only the participants matter and everyone else is a nobody - and NASCAR has created a template for aggressive, angry and sometimes desperate driving.

"Right now the pressure is on everybody, and everybody is racing hard," competition director Robin Pemberton said. "We're getting down to a handful of races to make it to the Chase, and the tension level, unfortunately, is high at this point."

So what should Stewart do?

He wants another Earnhardt around, but he's the logical choice to fill that void. He's a winner on and off the track (remember, Stewart gives millions to charity and is revered for his generosity), he's outspoken and has earned the right to be heard.

But he's grown increasingly frustrated of talking all the time and not getting any results.

"I sit down and talk with them all week long, but the thing is they look at you like you got three heads," he said. "They don't pay attention and they don't care."

So he gets angry and does his talking on the race track - and that's not unlike Earnhardt, either. But if Stewart could just stick with one message, and find a consistent way to deliver it, he someday might be able to get his point across.

Until then, he's just a hypocrite.

I like Stewart, but sometimes he goes too far. Yesterday was one of those times. Of course it didn't help that I had Carl Edwards as one of my picks, but Edwards has plenty of reason to be pissed off at Stewart. Edwards doesn't get mad often, but yesterday was one of those rare times. He has too much restraint, but how funny would have been to see Edwards kicking Stewart's ass?

I really like Tony Stewart alot, but I find it hard to listen to him when he talks about people needing to show patience or people needing to calm down.

Maybe he should take some of his advice before he hits the track again.

'Inside Nextel Cup' replayed audio from Edwards car after he spun Stewart on pit lane and heard about his black flag penalty.

"ask them how much will it be if I just whup his *ss after the race!"

I don't like Edwards at all but that just made me laugh my ass off and I was proud of him for saying that.

the penalty wasnt stiff enough......the guys he wrecked finished 39th and 41st.......thats great, he finishes 7th, and hes the one that caused it.....the other 2 were victims. itd be like giving a murderer 1 day in jail......they should have thrown him from the race...thatll turn some heads, and it would ensure justice

I'm not sure it was an action worth parking him.

They gave him a 1 lap penalty and made him in-eligible for the Lucky Dog. The fact that he came back and finished 7th showed that he is a hell of a driver. If he could control his temper, he would rule the track.

Tony's out of Meds!

It's simple, Tony's run out of his meds. ( Although I'm not surprised to here the tiny fan bring up Super G yet again when their driver fails yet again! How predictable...my,my.) Tony needs to calm his arse down a bit. Git him Carl!!

RE: black flag!

Demon, you've lost your mind...........nothing derogartory (sp. Galaxy?) was said about Gordon at all in this thread.

It was referenced about how he has changed the way Nascar looks at this ongoing problem. That's it.

You're correct, I was just referencing it to the latest incident that happened to involve Gordon.

Jeeze... just the mere mention of Gordon's name by myself causes all the ears to perk up from the Gordo fans..... how predicitable, my my.....

Once again.... nothing was even mentioned about Jr, but there they go.... bringing his name into it too.

Of course since I am a Jr. fan I can't say anything about Gordon, probably not even a compliment, without getting their panties in a bunch.

I'm a big fan of pop tarts, too.... do you want to go criticing them as well?  It has nothing to do with my comment, so might as well.

The spelling is "derogatory".  You can go to dictionary.com for all your spelling needs.  By the way, it is NASCAR- not Nascar.

technically, wouldn't it be N.A.S.C.A.R.?

and why would I go to dicitoinery.com when we have you here to correct us all?

NASCAR is an acronym for National Association for Stock Car Racing.

An acronym is a new word formed by the letters of a multi-word name, so you don't need to separate the letters by periods.

you don't use R.A.D.A.R..... just radar

or L.A.S.E.R.   just laser

That question answers your own question.

NASCAR's acronym could include periods too.  By rule, you can go either way.  NASA, UNICEF, OPEC, NAACP are all acroynms that usually omit the periods.  The only acroynm that I can think of, where I see both forms equally, is USA/U.S.A.

Anyway, writing NASCAR without capital letters implies that "Nascar" is a word.  We don't call our country "Usa".
