Unfortunately I finally had to shut it off before 11:00pm, so I missed all the good awards. I saw who won what today and was happy that Scorsese finally won that way long overdue award. There was way too many of his pictures that should have won in years past... Definately Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.
The Departed was the only movie that I saw from this year's nominees... although I think I want to see Little Miss Sunshine. While The Departed as a great movie, it wasn't quite on par with some of Scorsese's classics that I mentioned. I'd probably rank it with The Aviator, Casino or maybe even Cape Fear. I still don't know how Mark Wahlberg was nominated for best supporting actor in that picture since I thought his character was one of the weakest ones. Overall, The Departed was a very good movie and while I haven't seen the others, very worthy of the best picture award.
Other winners: Forest Whitaker for best actor. I haven't seen the movie he was nominated for, but good to see Forest win.... a veteran actor who's been in a lot of good movies and often igorned until now. Still would have liked to see Peter O'Toole win something before he dies.
Helen Mirren as best actress in The Queen. I think I might want to check this movie out once it comes on DVD. From what I've seen, her performance is dead-on as Queen Elizabeth.
Alan Arkin, best supporting actor in Little Miss Sunshine. I was really hoping for Eddie Murphy to win this one, oh well. Alan Arkin is another great veteran actor who finally won an award after only being nominated twice and not since 1969.
Jennifer Hudson, best supporting actress in Dreamgirls. Wow, talk about a cinderella story... Gets booted off American Idol and ends up winning an Academy Award. Great job.
Oh well, now I have to see some of these movies that have been nominated this year.
I think Casino is one of the greatest movies ever. The Departed deserved it, was an awesome movie in my opinion. I also haven't seen any of the others, except Little Miss Sunshine. That movie is hysterical and quite different. Was thrilled to see Alan Arkin win, because he was great in that movie.
