Nascar Tidbits....lots of good stuff.

Waltrip Worried About Company
Michael Waltrip said he's worried about more than the fact that two of his three cars won't be racing in today's UAW DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "It is not so much my lap; it is my whole company," Waltrip said after crashing on his qualifying lap Friday to miss his second Nextel Cup field. David Reutimann also failed to qualify, and Dale Jarrett will race today by using a third former champion's provisional in three races. "Our cars are not running right," Waltrip said. "It's just real disappointing. I'm really concerned about why we aren't any better than we are, but we are going to work.
GM Engine Not Ready
Introduced last fall, the new (GM) engine is the first to be designed specifically for racing by GM. It was touted as the being the successor to the production-based engines that had been used by GM in stock car racing since the mid-1950s. In using what is referred to as a "clean sheet of paper" while designing the engine, GM's engineers were confident they had addressed the kinds of issues that plagued previous designs, in turn building a race-ready powerplant. However, the planned rollout of the new engine into Nextel Cup competition, which originally was slated for sometime later this month or in April, has been delayed.
New GM Engine, not quite ready: GM's new R07 engine may not be ready for prime time. Introduced last fall, the new engine is the first to be designed specifically for racing by GM. When asked to comment on the delay, GM Racing program manager Pat Suhy said that teams were still testing the new engine and were not yet comfortable with giving up their current engine, the very reliable SB2 which won its first race when Dale Earnhardt took it to victory lane at the season-opening Daytona 500 in 1998. Although the new engine has not seen a lap of real competition, teams are able to simulate the stresses of a race weekend on their shop dynamometers, which are used to measure power and durability of engines. Those tests include running the engines until they are hot, letting them cool down and then heating them up again, which is known as heat cycling. What teams have found hasn't been all that comforting. "We've blown at least one of them up," said one senior team member who asked to remain anonymous. He did stress that failures do occur whenever teams work on something totally new. And, he added, he expects Chevy teams will continue to test the new engine, including on actual race weekends,(Yahoo Sports)(3-11-2007)

For #7-Robby Gordon life as an independent owner-driver on the NASCAR circuit is getting tougher. First, long-time sponsor Harrah's has dropped its financing; the world's largest gaming company is in the process of going private in a $17 billion sale. Second, planned new sponsor Monster, the Red Bull energy drink rival, has yet to sign on as one of Gordon's backers, a deal that was expected here.(Winston Salem Journal)(3-12-2007)

Inpection at Bristol for COT may change: NASCAR officials apparently have been telling crew chiefs in the Nextel Cup garage no one should fail inspection prior to the first practice session at Bristol Motor Speedway in two weeks. If there was a car that passed every template during the recent Bristol test for the COT, no one can point it out. The Ford nose missed the template by 3/16's of an inch on both sides and there was a minor issue with the hood that must be worked out in a hurry. Chevry teams also had issues in the nose and tail sections. Dodge and Toyota were also not without issues but individuals in those camps were not talking. The word now is NASCAR is going to relax the process, requiring teams to meet just four of the eight required points in the overall template.(CircleTrackPlus.com), see image of the inpsection 'cage' on my COT page.(3-11-2007)  http://www.jayski.com/teams/car-future.htm

Kyle Busch looks at ownership: #5-Kyle Busch started Kyle Busch Motorsports about three years ago near his home in Mooresville, N.C. The Las Vegas native says with a grin that the operation was started to help provide tax deductions. But it has turned into a growing business, and the beneficiary is Alex Haase, a 17-year-old junior at Centennial High School. Busch will sponsor Haase in the regional NASCAR Grand National West Division this year for a Southern California-based team that has a car formerly driven by current Cup driver David Gilliland. "This could translate into something bigger down the road," Busch said of race-team ownership status. He drives part time in the Craftsman Truck Series for owner Billy Bellew [#15-Bill Lester], and he might begin taking a bigger role with that team. "He's looking to step back and let me take over that deal," said Busch. Haase will run in all the Grand National West races and compete in the Super Late Models divisions at the LVMS Bullring and short track in Irwindale, Calif., when his West schedule allows. Busch said he plans to return to his hometown to compete in three Super Late Models races at the Bullring this year, two in the summer and one in the fall.(Las Vegas Review Journal)(3-10-2007)

ISC expects to have a track in at least Seattle, Denver OR NYC areas: NASCAR chairman Brian France fully expects International Speedway Corp. to have a new track in Seattle, Denver or New York City in the not-so-distant future. "I don't expect all three to get a facility built," France said before Sunday's race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "But I do expect something positive to happen. I also expect lots of deterrents that happen when you try to build community support." France said Denver appears to have momentum. He was not concerned about recent insults by Washington state politicians who are fighting a move to the Seattle area. Expansion will make it more difficult for tracks such as recently renovated Las Vegas Motor Speedway to get a second date. In an ideal world, France would like another date for Kansas City, Homestead-Miami and Las Vegas. He urged that it could take time unless Speedway Motorsports Inc. gives up one of its dates at another track.(ESPN.com)(3-13-2007)
New Track in Minnesota Planned: Competition for a place on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule may be extremely hot but that hasn't deterred the International Motorsports Entertainment and Development Corporation from pressing ahead with plans to build a track in Minnesota. The project is estimated by management of IMEDC to cost $200 million and will include a paved three-quarter mile high-banked oval suitable for NASCAR, ASA, ARCA and IRL style racing as well as a one-quarter mile NHRA style drag strip. Plans also include the incorporation of a major retail development to further add to this soon to be destination location. One of the major market centres of the Midwest, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St.Paul, has a reputation for its strong business climate and economy. With a population of approximately 31 million, it has been ranked by Fortune magazine in the list of top 10 business locales in the nation, and is home to 16 Fortune 500 companies including current NASCAR team sponsors Best Buy, Target, 3M and General Mills. "Our strategy concentrates on expansion and innovation targeting motorsport spectators, sponsors and competitors. We plan to grow operations and increase shareholder value through the development and expansion of a motorsports facility within the Minneapolis-St Paul Market," said Jim Farnum, IMEDC CEO, "Our goal is to create a first-class complex for the state and local community of which all Minnesotans can be proud."(Crash.net)(3-13-2007)

Just wait until Dale Jarrett uses up his championship provisionals..... then we'll see how worried Waltrip is.

In regards to the new track..... I really can't see one being built in NYC area, there's too much opposition to it being build. lack of good land, suitable location, too much people and traffic. However, I always thought it would be great to build one near Atlantic City. Good location, lots of undeveloped land, not too populatated.   I would probably expect a track to be built in Seattle though.

There are a lot of new tracks that want NASCAR to race there and everyone wants multiple dates. Only 36 races during the year, there's just not enough time to please everyone though.

I've always thought that each track should only get one date...but I'm afraid that will never happen...the current tracks won't give them up without a fight.
(it's all about the seating and thus the money from fans)
