Once friends, maybe not any more...

Gordon, Montoya not impressed with each other

MIKE LACZYNSKI

Is there a feud brewing between Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya? The two drivers were none too pleased with each other after Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where the two fought for track position late in the race.

Gordon was a lap down and was trying to work his way into position to get the free pass back on the lead lap, while Montoya was trying to chase down the leaders.

"I wasn't too impressed with that because as soon as he started getting to my [rear] it started getting really loose in and started losing momentum," Montoya said of the four-time Cup champion. "I couldn't believe that he did it, but I don't have anything against him. You've got to understand that he wants to get his lap back, and he did."

And that was the point, Gordon said.

"We were a lap down, and had the caution come out then we would have just gotten our lap back that way, but what happened was the caution wasn't coming," Gordon said. "We had long green-flag runs, so I had to drive to the front. So anybody that was holding me up, then I was going to try to pass him.

"I think that one thing he'll learn over time is that when you have a lapped car that eager, you give it up. If you're catching the guy it's a little bit different, but he was just sitting there in that position. He wasn't making any ground. ... My car was too good, and I had to start trying to get to the front to get that lap back."

Montoya, though, said he was catching Matt Kenseth.

"I was getting to Matt," Montoya said. "I thought we were catching Matt a little bit and a little bit, and Jeff caught me and started running behind me, and it was getting me really loose in.

"I started losing the whole momentum, and he was starting to run beside me every straight. I don't know what he was doing. I don't know if he was racing with [Kyle Busch] to try to get the lucky dog. That kind of screwed us a little bit, but I guess he's trying to do his own race as well."

sorry to disappoint, we've already had that little discussion.  It seems the only people to ever bring it up are gordon fans who seem to want to validate themselves or their 'driver' that he actually can compare to Sr.
Remember, Gordon won three of his championships with one of the best crew chiefs ever. While Sr. won with many, hell, his first championship was on a totally different team!

lol no dissapointment here....if you remember..jeff won all his championships while SR was still racing. Sr won no championships while Jeff was racing. That is why so many peeps dont like Jeff. He stole all the thunder of the one who usually won by wrecking his competition. Now his son is trying to win one, but i dont figure it will be in my lifetime. The only chance he has if he would go to RCR. they call him JR for a reason........

typical response, like so many we have heard....gordon fans either shout about what he did over a decade ago, or they resort to personal barbs.
why not do us a favor and email ol jeffy and ask him how it is being the third rung on the ladder that is Hendrick?

Sorry you're wrong there.... Dale's final championship was in 1994, Jeff Gordon's 2nd full year.

is that the only response i can get?? typical response?? sounds like some E fans are in denial. I guess if my driver was a third generation reject i may respond the same way. jeff had to work his way into racing...unlike JR who was given everything by his daddy. i never liked Sr or JR...but i do appreciate what SR did for the sport. lol i have a bro who is a die hard SR fan and i have had all these discussions before, so nothing you can say will surprise me. i expect it, the response is always the same. lol whats up with Kikie.....sounds like she really likes JJ....lol j/k sounds like we are going to have a great season!!!

I like Jimmie f'in Johnson as much as I like shoes from payless. Didnt lil jeffy get a lot of backing from stepdaddy? Hell the dude doesnt even know where he is from. Sometimes he is an indiana boy and sometimes a cali boi.

They are not playing this year because we had a disagreement late last year that a few people took too far. They acted very immture with some of their actions.  The council decided to cut all ties with this other league. I was willing to put it all behind me and start fresh but apparently some people over there can't handle that.

Yes I know there are. We were once allied and had a good relationship. A lot of members went between both teams. Unfortunately that alliance was dissolved last year. Some members left on both sides of the league, but a lot still remain in both and that's fine.
