Gordon's start of season best ever? been asked, is #24-Jeff Gordon's 2007 start of the season after 9 races the best ever? I only looked back 20 years, but it was not. It is, however, the best since 1987, when Dale Earnhardt had 6 wins, 8 top-fives, 8 top-tens and 1555 points. But with the extra 10 points for winning a race [over 1987], Earnhardt would have 1605 points. Gordon has 2 wins, 7 top-fives, 8 top-tens and 1521 points after 9 races.(5-1-2007)

either way, he is off to a hot start and his showing that he is one to be reckoned with before the Chase starts.

What stat you forgot to put in there is that Dale wrecked 57 people in the first 9 races to get those six wins! Gordon would have passed Dale in wins by 2000 if you take away all the wins Dale got by wrecking people. Bottom line.....if Chuck Norris was racing cars he would have 457 wins in 456 starts!

Tell it like it is Bow Tie. I wonder if Dale EVER won a race without wrecking someone? We're talkin brawn vs. finese. Too different driving styles. Dale would be parked these days but he was the "old Nascar golden boy". Gordon is a better driver. Earnhardt couldn't win without "intimidating". Old news. Gordon's huge lead will be gone soon enough with the chase.( Something Ironbrain" never had to deal with) Wonder if Sr. E would have 7 championships if he had to deal with the chase? Hmm To bad we'll never know. Gordon runs away with the championship if no chase this year.

I agree..I never liked the chase. The only stats you can really look at is when both Sr. and Gordon were racing against each other.

Wind Tunnel All-Star Special: 'Wonderboy' Or 'The Intimidator' Who's Better? Despain To Host 90-Minute Panel Discussion Comparing Gordon And Earnhardt Careers: As part of its weeklong All-Star programming lineup leading up to the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge, SPEED will deliver a special episode of Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain. The 90-minute special, entitled Wonderboy or The Intimidator Whos Better? will air live at 7 p.m. ET on May 16, as Despain brings in experts to compare the careers of the sports ultimate all stars -- Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon. Earnhardt versus Gordon is a fascinating comparison, Despain said. Earnhardt is the epitome of old NASCAR, a series born among WWII vets who treated racing as another form of combat. The Intimidator was the last in a long line of grizzled tough guys who reigned as the sports biggest heroes. In contrast, Gordon opened the door to new NASCAR. Hes the definitive young gun, the first driver to combine on-track prowess with mainstream marketing appeal. Which of these guys you think is better says as much about you as it does about the drivers, and I suspect hearing the differences between Earnhardt fans and Gordon fans will be half the fun of this show. Despain will lead an all-star panel discussion, with early confirmations from team owner Rick Hendrick and former drivers Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace. Wallace, the 1989 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and current ESPN broadcaster, and Waltrip, a three-time NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and current FOX/SPEED broadcaster, will each make the case for the driver of their choice. When the Wind Tunnel staff pitched this idea to me, I must admit was a little skeptical, said Frank Wilson, SPEED VP of Production and Executive Producer for NASCAR content. But after hearing Dave and the Tunnelheads out, I quickly came around to their way of thinking. This is just what Wind Tunnel was designed to be: a place where experts and fans alike can debate relevant motor racing topics. Wonderboy vs. The Intimidator is certainly relevant and stirs the passion of just about every NASCAR fan. - SPEED TV, Press Release

Thanks for the heads up on the programing Matt! Should be an interesting show. Can't really compare the two though. I mean with the Chase and all the game has changed along with stratagies. I think its safe to assume that both drivers are and were a cut above most other drivers they both had to face. Too bad the two didn't have more time to race each other. Both guys grew to respect the other, I believe that says it all. Have to admit, I do miss ole Ironhead out there making things interesting like only he could do! RIP Dale.
