#88 Retires with Robert Yates: Robert Yates confirmed today he is retiring the #88 from Robert Yates Racing (RYR) following the last race of the 2007 Nextel Cup season. He is requesting NASCAR transfer the number to Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. for use in competition for the 2008 Sprint Cup Series. "Ralph Earnhardt drove the #88 Olds in 1957 and because of this number's history with the Earnhardt family; I felt car #88 should continue with Dale Earnhardt, Jr.," Yates said. "Younger fans don't realize I built cars and raced against Ralph. I also had a very close relationship with Dale Earnhardt, Sr. I'm proud to transfer this number to Dale Jr. and let him know how much I appreciate the friendship and competitive racing I've always enjoyed with his family," Yates continued. Dale Jarrett began driving the #88 Ford Quality Care/Ford Credit Racing Ford in 1996 and promptly won the Daytona 500 in the team's first race. UPS assumed the role of primary sponsorship in 2001 with Ford Credit staying on as an associate sponsor. Jarrett had 29 victories and won, what was then, the Winston Cup championship in 1999. He also finished in the top 10 in points seven consecutive seasons from 1996 through 2002. Ricky Rudd assumed driving duties in 2007, with sponsorship from Snickers. Doug Yates announced two weeks ago, David Gilliland and Travis Kvapil will be the team's drivers in 2008 with sponsorship and car numbers to be announced.
This is how Jr. got the #88 from Yates. Very unselfish and classy move on his part.
One thing that I'm not too crazy about.... I wish they had used just one look. I don't like when drivers switch off and on between a few different paintschemes. One look and stick with it. That's what identifies you. Then run a few different special paint schemes throughout the year.
I prefer the mountain dew car over the National Guard car, I wish that was the only paint scheme they used.
Isn't one of Hendrick's identifiers (like the "E" at DEI or Evernham's "flags" on his numbers) that all his cars have yellow numbers? Or is that just coincidence?

Earnhardt, who helped design his two primary paint schemes and red car-number graphic, will drive the #88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolets next season.
Yeah joined up yesterday, hopefully I was one of the first 8888 fans.
And of course I had to order some new Jr. gear..... Ordered a sweatshirt through NASCAR.com and 2 t-shirts from Dale Jr's store to add to my rather large and growing collection.
And of course.... had to order the 2 diecasts so I went to QVC for that.

Tony Eury Jr. will leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. for Hendrick Motorsports earlier than expected, team officials confirmed on Thursday. Eury, who has been Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car or crew chief for all but one season since the two broke into the Nextel Cup Series in 2000, will step down after the Oct. 7 race at Talladega Superspeedway. He will be allowed to take four members of Earnhardt's No. 8 team with him under a deal made by DEI when it agreed to free him contractually to join Earnhardt at HMS in 2008.
I think all of this mid season switching is crap. It should all be done after the season. I am so sick of what number jr will race what sponser ect. will Casy have the bud sponser! We have a cup champion to decide. Oh yea neither of them are in the running.

neither is Newman! sorry, couldn't help it. its just the nature of the BUSINESS of the sport....everybody wants to get their ducks in a row for sponsers and merchandising....besides the fans and media both are the ones who have to know everything right now...I think the teams and drivers would prefer to keep it under wraps most times.
Amp will be the sponsor for 20 races; National Guard for 16.
From the stripe underneath the windows (silver for the AMP car, red for the National Guard car) to wanting the splitter white so his crew chief could see it easier, Earnhardt Jr.'s suggestions have been implemented.
He also wanted to have the rear of the car in black since tire rubber seems to fall there anyway. And there was another reason.
"We painted the rear deck of the car flat black, which is sort of consistent with the Corvette that me and my father raced in 2001 [in the 24-hour race at Daytona], which I thought was a really neat part about that car," Earnhardt Jr. said.
