This weekend we are heading to Martinsville Speedway, the oldest track on the NASCAR circuit. There have been many great races there and lots of different winners. Just for kicks, if the greatest drivers of all time were racing at Martinsville, what would your 5 driver picks be this week? These drivers are all racing at the prime of their careers..... Pick in order with no salary restrictions.
My picks
1. Richard Petty. The king was king at Martinsville, hands down. 15 wins, the most of any driver. 30 top 5's, 37 top 10's.
2. Darrell Waltrip. Ol DW sure knew how to get around Martinsville.... 11 wins, 27 top 5's there in 52 starts.
3. Jeff Gordon. You can't go wrong with Gordon at Martinsville, and I'm sure that will be evident in the picks this week. 7 wins, maybe 8 by this weekend. He is the only current driver that I am picking.
4. Dale Earnhardt. In 44 starts, the Intimidator had 6 wins and 18 top 5's at Martinsville. You wouldnt want him in your rearview mirror here.
5. Fred Lorenzen. In only 17 starts at Martinsville , he had 6 wins including 4 in a row. If he didn't retire earlier than expected, he would have had a few more at least. His last start came at Martinsville.
lou , i definitely have to agree with the king being on top of list but how can you rank gordon below anyone else ? nevermind the 7 wins he has 23 top tens in 29 races . i dont care for him but thats an impressive stat . here are my picks
