truck series scoring

at the end of the year we have to do something with the scoring system in the truck series i picked 1,2,4,5,11 and finished 20 something thats tough. i think we need to make it more like the cup series! maybe have salarys like cup! this current scoring system needs work badly! every week all you do is pick mike skinner, travis kvapil, todd bodine, johnny benson, ron hornaday and any cup driver thats no fun!

I agree, there does need to be a change to the Truck Series format. The Same drivers are picked each week. We need to institute something where you are forced to pick some of the lower drivers as well. We will look at several different options during the off-season.

Its one thing to identify the problem, lets work together to fix it.

I think the philosophy towards setting up the league this way was two-fold.
1- to create a league that was similar to the others but was still a little different to have its own identity.
and
2- have the drivers grouped into manufacturer class so that all the teams weren't picking all the toyota drivers each week since they were the dominant drivers.

I think those two principles need to stay in place.

What I would propose would be that we take the Top Five drivers from the end of the year standings and make those the only drivers you could pick from next year as your Segment Drivers. Whats more, none of us would be allowed to pick them each week as our Core Drivers.

meaning if the year were to end now, then those five would be Hornaday, Skinner, Kvapil, Bodine, Benson.

therefore, no team could pick them at all for any race next year unless you chose them as the segment driver for that particular segment.

this would force us all to pick 'lesser' drivers for the core drivers.

That's a possibility to look at. I also think it might help separate the scores each week if we pick more drivers instead of 4. We could pick 5 and drop the lowest score, or keep picking 4 and not drop the lowest score.

Not sure about the top-5 thing. Sure we need to find a way to pick the "lesser" drivers, but they change so much race to race, we need to have some stability to fall back on. The only thing I dont like in the scoring is dropping the low score. The scoring would equal out if all points were counted. Tweek the scoring so those who have bad finishes are punished harder. I know I am a rookie in the truck series, but I cant see picking a driver, then not counting his score. If the top-5 drivers are taken away...its a crap shoot !!! No skill involved there...just luck!! Good luck in the process. These things are never easy!!

Not sure if that would solve the problem though:

points standings as they sit right now -

1 - Hornaday ...........Chevy
2 - Skinner ............Toyota
3 - Kvapil ................Ford
4 - Benson.............Toyota
5 - Bodine..............Toyota
6 - Crawford............Ford
7 - Musgrave........Toyota
8 - Crafton............Chevy
9 - Starr...............Chevy
10- Sprague.......Toyota
11- Darnell...........Ford
12- Setzer.............Dodge
13- Gaughan.........Chevy
14- Cook.............Toyota
15- Allen..............Chevy
16- Sauter.........Chevy
17- Mccumbee......Chevy
18- Schrader........Dodge
19- Bliss.............Dodge

5 of the top ten are the Toyota group while that dreaded offshoot Chevy group are over at the bottom of the Top Twenty....so if we were to base it on points, it really wouldnt look that much different than it does now....meaning we could still pick the same drivers over and over again.
I could be wrong but I dont think ditching the Manufacturer Class Grouping is the right thing to do.

Well if they were in different groups, then you could only pick either Hornaday, Skinner, Kvapil, Benson and Bodine.  You couldnt have all of them in your picks like you do now.

Second group would be Crawford, Musgrave, Crafton, Starr, Sprague.  These drivers don't get picked nearly as much as they should be, but if you had to choose one, it would help with the scores.

Third group would be even more diverse.... Darnell, Setzer, Gaughan, Cook, Allen.

The problem that we have right now is that we pretty much allow everyone to pick the best drivers each week. That's why the scores are close. We need to be able to separate them, and maybe if we ditched the classes that we have now and used the different point groups, it would help a lot. That's my opinion.

Not necessarily all three Toyota drivers, but the best driver from each of the groups they can pick.

thats the idea I thought....I mean, we cant help it if the truck series isn't producing enough parity.  my only beef as been the second chevy group which are all usually scrubs.
I like that we drop the lowest driver, but that I can understand why everyone else wants to do away with that one.

Well, one possibility that we could do is the 5 best drivers from each manufacturer in a group..... and then maybe 1 or 2 groups of the scrub drivers from all different manufacturers that you have to choose.

pick like lroc does! except divide the drivers in groups of 5 .the top 5 are 1 group to choose from, the next 5 are another group to choose from, and so on and dont drop the lowest scoring driver!

I got one but its way out there, At the start of 2008 Season the top 30 are locked in the race as for the Truck number. Take the top 20 in the points and put them in 5 groups, everyone picks 5 drivers 1 from each group and thats your team for the first segment. After 5 races line the groups up by the points and if someone thinks their team is fine they can keep them, if they think their team needs work then they can change them. Just a thought

Well, its different.... I'm not sure how people would feel about having some kind of control each week though. But its another option we could do.

kinda like the top 5 idea from each auto maker . then divide all others into two equal groups for total of five picks and count all scores.
chevy
ford/dodge
toyota
group4
group5

if kyle busch or mark martin runs race they would bump other drivers down to lower groups sticking with top5 theme for each race....think segment driver should be your choice

Well since I mentioned above of course, I like that idea.... however I don't really know that if Kyle Busch or Mark Martin runs a race, should you bump one of the top 5 drivers below. I think they should be grouped by owner standings.

How would you decide who to bump on a fair basis? What if someone else like Clint Bowyer or Denny Hamlin run? Are they better then the top 5 drivers in the standings? That remains to be seen.....  It might cause some confusion.... especially for me who makes the list up each week.

Well maybe......

If a Cup driver decides to run in a Truck race, we wouldn't put them into one of the lower standings. We could have an option where  we could sub one or more of those Cup guys for one of the top 5 drivers in whatever manufacter's group they are driving for.  I think that's pretty fair.

If we do go that route maybe I can separate the two groups into "The Chevy Scrubs" and the Toyota/Ford/Dodge Scrubs. I think that should be somewhat even most weeks.
