Denny Hamlin, widely considered the top challenger to Jimmie Johnson for the 2010 Sprint Cup Series championship, plans to drive this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Hamlin tore the ACL while playing basketball on Friday, a team spokesman confirmed. The plans are for Hamlin to be in the car at Daytona and throughout the 2010 campaign, and then have surgery to repair the ligament after the season. Immediate surgery is not an option because of the lengthy recovery time.
No definite timetable has been set as far as surgery. Hamlin underwent minor surgery on his right knee in December.
Hamlin won four races in 2009, including the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He finished fifth in points, and second behind Johnson in Driver Rating.
Entering his fifth full season, Hamlin has eight victories, 47 top-five finishes and 79 top-10s in 151 starts and has made the Chase in each of the past four years.
wow, that's pretty crazy... I really don't see how he can go through the entire season with all the shifting that he'll have to do each week. He was primed to have a huge season but now things aren't looking too good.
I think theres no question now that drivers are sure fire athletes like athletes in any other sport. Nonetheless he's gonna have a hard time in that car all year, the races are gonna take a toll on him eventually...Hopefully no major accidents for him either, or who knows what's gonna happen to his future.
is it just me? I dont think this injury would be that bad driving............road courses would be horrible, but the knee isn't going to get that much of a workout if the pedals are configured right.
He doesn't count. Even when he gets hurt he ends up winning a championship. He could probably have both his legs amputated and he'd still end up winning the championship this year.
