Kasey Kahne is bound for Hendrick Motorsports -- but not until 2012.
The current driver of the No. 9 Ford, who will not be returning to Richard Petty Motorsports next season, has signed with NASCAR's most successful organization with an eye toward piloting the team's No. 5 car in 2012, NASCAR.COM has learned. What Kahne will do next season is still to be determined.
Kahne was at an appearance in San Francisco on Tuesday, and through a spokesperson had no comment. Hendrick officials also declined comment.
NASCAR limits teams to four cars, and all of Hendrick's current drivers -- Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- are signed through the 2011 campaign. Last year Martin signed a two-year extension that ends after the 2011 season, the conclusion of which opens the door for Kahne to join an organization that has won nine championships at NASCAR's highest level.
Kahne's plans for next season, though, are still unclear. One certainty is he won't be returning to RPM, which announced earlier Tuesday that the driver had informed the team he would not renew his contract.
Kahne has been with the organization, which started as Evernham Motorsports, since he entered NASCAR's top level in 2004. After a tumultuous 2009 season that saw him win two races but finish 10th in the Chase, he said he would let RPM's performance dictate whether he would remain at the only home he's ever known at the Cup level.
Evidently, seven races were enough. Kahne is 26th in points heading into this week's event at Texas Motor Speedway.
"Kasey is a very talented driver, and I have enjoyed watching him race," team co-owner Richard Petty said in a statement released by RPM. "We all wish him nothing but the best and hope he succeeds in anything he chooses to do."
"Drivers like Kasey Kahne are the very reason we got into this sport," team co-owner George Gillett added. "Kasey has helped us get to where we are today. We wish him well in his future however we have the rest of this season to race together and we're looking forward to a successful remainder of the year."
This is the strangest driver signing that I've heard of because it won't be next season. So where the heck will he go next year? Unless he races for Stewart-Haas for one season since they are partners with Hendrick. very weird. And then what happens with Martin, will he retire for good?
Personal opinion is that Mark will go to Stewart-Haas to help them get their 3rd team started, and Kasey will take the #5 car beginning in 2011. Either way, I was excited to see this. Cool deal.

I thought for sure that Danica Patrick would be in the 5 car at Hendrick in 2012 after Martin exits it. This Kasey Kahne addition throws everyone a curve ball.
Of course there is another possibility as well, what if Dale Earnhardt Jr. leaves the main Hendrick camp, and pulls a Tony Stewart by taking Jr. Motorsports to the Cup series? He'd still be partnered with Hendrick but racing under his own team.
I was messing with a Jr fan at work today. Told him Jr was retiring after 2011, starting his own team and going to purchase the 3 and put Danica in it... I thought he was going to punch me...
UPDATE2 - HMS PR: Beginning with the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Kasey Kahne will drive the #5 Chevys of Hendrick Motorsports after signing a long-term contract with the organization. Mark Martin, 51, the current driver of Hendrick Motorsports' #5 team, will complete the 2010 and 2011 seasons. When Kahne takes over in 2012, he will join teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Hendrick's four-car stable. "In Kasey, we saw an opportunity to cement a big piece of our future," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He possesses incredible talent and a tremendous dedication to his craft, and we know he'll be a great fit within our company. Kasey has earned the respect of his future teammates by the way he's handled himself on and off the racetrack, and we know he'll be a contributor to the success of Hendrick Motorsports for many years to come. To have someone of his caliber join our team is an unbelievable opportunity for us." "I have a comfort level with Mr. Hendrick, my future teammates and the culture of the organization," said Kahne, whose contract with Hendrick Motorsports will run through the 2015 Sprint Cup season. "For me, it's the right fit on every level, and I think it gives me a great chance to win races and compete for championships. "Determining the next step in my career has been an important process, and I'm excited and relieved to have the decision made and announced. Now it's my responsibility to put all of my energy into winning races and having a successful 2010 with my current team and our sponsors." Although 2012 and beyond has been solidified, Kahne is not scheduled to drive a Hendrick Motorsports entry in 2011 due to NASCAR's four-car limit. While who he will race for has not yet been determined, Kahne intends to drive a full Sprint Cup Series schedule next season. "If this opportunity was going to happen, I knew having some unanswered questions would be part of the scenario at this stage," Kahne acknowledged. "Hendrick Motorsports has a commitment to Mark Martin that they want to fulfill, and that's important. It's part of what attracts me to the team.
Jr Motorsports with Mark buying in for a share and starting a cup team with 2 cars. #8 driven by Jr and the #7 driven part time by Mark and Danica eventually becoming Danica's full time ride, Robbie Gordon gets rich selling his number. Can you imagine what they could make in merchandise alone!!
