Anyone else hear about this during the broadcast today?
Kirk Sherlmerdine, long time crew chief of Earnhardt Sr. in late eighties, made the Daytona 500 but did not have money for tires and would have had to retire from the race as so many field-fillers often do. He was begging for sponser help all week on the broadcasts but to no avail.
A group of long-time Sr. fans were at the race and had the financial wherewithall to help Kirk and provided him with the money for tires so that he could actually race instead of just take the green flag until the first caution.
He ended up finishing 20th! Who knew! I always figured him to be a bust, but it it just goes to show that a little money can go along ways. (not that the tires are cheap mind you)
