#48 Penalty

NASCAR announced today that four penalties have been issued to two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series teams, as a result of rule violations this past weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
Chad Knaus, crew chief for the #48 Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson, has been fined $25,000 and suspended from all NASCAR events until March 22, 2006 [thru Atlanta race]. Knaus has also been placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2006. The penalties come because of an unapproved template modification to the rear window area, violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 20-3.12.1 (A) (unapproved template modification.) of the 2006 NASCAR Rule book. The violation was discovered during Feb. 12 post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500. On Feb. 13, NASCAR ejected Knaus from further participation in Daytona 500 activities as a result of the violation.[No Point Penalties]
Three penalties were assessed to the #96 Chevrolet team, due to the use of an unapproved carburetor, a violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment that do not conform to NASCAR rules) of the 2006 NASCAR Rule Book. Crew chief Philippe Lopez was fined $25,000; driver Terry Labonte was penalized with the loss of 25 driver championship points; and car owner William Saunders was penalized 25 owner championship points. This rule violation was also discovered during post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500.(NASCAR PR)(2-21-2006)

Can anyone tell me how the heck Johnson wasn't fined 25 driver points or Hendrick fined 25 owner points? Knaus flat out cheated, he knew what he was doing, he's a veteran crewchief that has consistantly tried bending or breaking the rules. This time he went a little too far by tampering with the rear window area after inspection. Now you have the #96 team, who is a brand new team and just starting to get their feet wet. It was reported that the wrong carburetor was in the car, but announced on trackside that it was an honest mistake. That type of carburtor is used on other types of tracks, not restrictor plate races. So NASCAR fines them and takes away the points as well? Meanwhile Johnson's team excapes any serious penalities except for Knaus not being there for 3 more races?  In the past, when a crewchief has cheated, like Harvick's crewchief did last year, the driver and owner were fined points.

Not this time though... what's the difference? Am I missing something?  Why... because Johnson won the Daytona 500 and NASCAR doesn't want any bad publicity on Johnson's media tour??

Looks like NASCAR is playing favorites yet again.

#96 HOF and JGR to appeal penalties: Hall of Fame Racing has an engine lease program with Joe Gibbs Racing, and the unapproved carburetor came with the engine supplied to Hall of Fame Racing. "Joe Gibbs Racing provides all of the engines and carburetors for Hall of Fame Racing," said Gibbs.  "We are responsible for any issues having arisen from the unapproved carburetor that was taken by NASCAR in Daytona.  It is never our intention to put any unapproved parts on any of our race cars or those of our partners.  We will join Hall of Fame Racing in appealing the severity of the penalty."(JGR PR)(2-21-2006)

Found this on Nascar.com

Knaus' four-race suspension tied the longest such penalty in NASCAR history, which was levied against Richard Childress Racing crew chief Todd Berrier last year, after driver Kevin Harvick's car also failed a post-qualifying inspection at Las Vegas.

The biggest difference was that Harvick and Childress each received a 25-point deduction in the standings last March. Pemberton said Tuesday that those point deductions and Tuesday's deductions to Hall of Fame Racing were a result of actual unapproved pieces on the respective cars that received them.

The pieces used to warp the configuration of Johnson's car in qualifying were not illegal, Pemberton said. Still, a perceived inconsistency was at the heart of Newman and Berrier's concerns.

"I expected [the penalty] to probably be at least similar to mine," Berrier said Wednesday morning. "I guess they elected not to do points for some reason that I'm not aware of -- but obviously they must have a reason.

I guess you can cheat as long as you use approved pieces to cheat with. Is this warped or what.

This is probably the truth or at least the closest thing to it.  As much as I hate the #48 team, Nascar may have elected to do the same thing no matter if it was Ken Schrader who 'modified the template' and won the Daytona 500.  Doesn't make it right, but you know Nascar loves good P.R.!!!

Dude... chill.... This has nothing to do with Jr. How come anytime something is said about Gordon or Johnson you think it's jealous Jr. fans??

I've even heard from Johnson fans that they didn't think it was the right thing for NASCAR to do.

RE: #48 Penalty

I think Muzzy should teach some of those players here how to speak English, instead of some of the hybrid ebonic-wannabegangsta-wannabeilliterate type of languages we have here.

Of course it annt going to happen Yall

Hmmm, it is both.  But I will let the errors pass on this one.

It is a cop-out for you to say "you should win because I know nothing about nascar". Why bother with playing? Are you scared to try?

I play because it is a great league, regardless of the sport.  Plus, I get to talk to wonderful people like yourself.

One would think after playing in any kind of league for a year, you would pick up on things to become familiar with the sport.

I think we have gone on a tangent with this thread.  It is titled "#48 Penalty", not "#269 Penalty."  Yes, Lou, I have picked up on a few things.  However, my overall knowledge of the sport compared to 90% of the people in this league is far inferior.  Time to close this thread.
