McFarland released as driver of No. 88 car From Team Press Release August 10, 2006 11:46 AM EDT (15:46 GMT)
MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Mark McFarland has been released by JR Motorsports and will be replaced by Martin Truex Jr. at Watkins Glen, the team announced Thursday.
McFarland had made 21 Busch Series starts in the No. 88 Chevrolet this season, with a best finish of seventh at Talladega, his only top-10. He finished 17th in the series' most recent race, at O'Reilly Raceway Park in suburban Indianapolis.
"Mark was instrumental in getting our Busch program off the ground and he will always have a role in the history of JR Motorsports. But the reality is that as a business we have the responsibility of delivering a level of performance for our sponsors," team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. "This change is being made to address that concern."
McFarland made his Busch Series debut in 1998, driving in four races under family ownership. After signing a contract for the 2006 season, the Virginia native finished 20th in the 2005 season finale at Homestead in his first race for JR Motorsports.
Winner of nearly 200 go-kart features, McFarland came up through the Late Model ladder, winning the 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series national championship.
Wow.... this just hit me out of the blue, didn't see this one coming. I guess recording only one top 10 during the year will get you canned. So how many races will Truex race in.... the rest of the year? Shane Huffman drove a 2nd Jr. Motorsports car in Gateway, could he be a possible replacement? I think they want to have 2 cars next year so either way a new driver will have to be added.
Stupid move. But this is how it is the development drivers are treated now. If you don't win in your first 3 races, you are fired.
I would guess Truex, Jr and Shane Huffman will fill out the rest of the races. This may be a problem 10/28 with the Busch race in Memphis, Hooter Pro Cup in Myrtle Beach and Cup in Atlanta. Truex or Jr will probably just fly back and forth if needed.
Unless Jr. has a 2nd sponsor lined up, it might be better for him just to run with 1 team until he gets it running a little better.

you hit it right on the head, I think he could have had more time afforded him, but thats not the case. While I dont think he deserved M. Waltrip type of time, one more year could have helped him develop alot.
