And so it officially ends

ATLANTA (AP) -- Most members of the Atlanta Braves probably weren't even watching when their record streak of division titles ended Tuesday night.

"We've known about it for some time," third baseman Chipper Jones said.

Atlanta's scheduled game against the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed due to rain Tuesday night, sparing the Braves the chore of seeing the Mets-Marlins scores posted on the scoreboard throughout the night.

New York's 6-4 win in a game delayed twice by rain eliminated the Braves from the NL East race, ending their string of 14 straight division championships.

The Braves and Phillies will make up the game as part of a doubleheader Wednesday, starting at 4:35 p.m. It will be the third doubleheader between the teams this season.

The Braves are five games under .500 and they began the day 19 games behind the first-place Mets, so the interest for Atlanta long ago shifted to the wild-card race.

The Braves' playoff hopes are slim. They are five games behind wild-card leader San Diego with 19 games left in the season.

"The margin for error is very small," Braves manager Bobby Cox said Tuesday. "The players know that, and they're going to keep giving it their best shot."

There were comments in both clubhouses that Atlanta's unprecedented run of division championships should be celebrated.

"I think people forget sometimes how hard it is to win," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I think when you look up there and see 14 flags, I would call that better than good. Great, maybe. Then I look over and say, 'If they don't make it, I don't feel sorry for them."'

Braves general manager John Schuerholz said the end of the run of division titles, which began in 1991 and excludes the 1994 strike-shortened season, is not reason to dismantle the team.

"The spirit of the organization isn't broken, nor is the mechanism that has built this grand run over 15 years broken," Schuerholz said. "It just needs a tuneup."

Added Schuerholz: "There are a lot of mechanics."

Schuerholz said he believes some fans couldn't fully appreciate the streak while it continued.

"I think this streak will look more grand and will stand more strongly at its end than it was appreciated in the middle," he said.

"It was a sort of a sameness to many people. I think looking back it will shine more brightly. It will be more grand. It will stand more proudly in the eyes of the people who understand baseball."

Jones said more time may have to pass before the 14-year streak can be placed in perspective.

"It probably won't be properly recognized for 10 or 20 years from now, but we can't do anything about that," Jones said.

Meanwhile, Jones said credit this season goes to the Mets.

"They've played well," he said. "They've played better than us.

"When they go out and stick it to you, you just have to tip your cap to them."

I really wish the Braves would have made the postseason as the wildcard, because that would have been a nice easy series win for the Mets. Only team I'm concerned about is the Marlins because when they make the playoffs, they are tough to beat. So sorry Braves fans.... most of you gave up a few months ago but now you can officially put your tomahawks down. Your consecutive divison championships have now come to an end. I'm just so glad that it was the Mets who were able to end it. By the weekend the Mets will have officially clinched the division over Florida and Philly. A new era begins now.

Actually the Mets can claim the division as soon as tonight. If Atlanta sweeps Philly in the doubleheader (yeah... right!)... and Mets beat the Marlins tonight, the division is locked up.

First time I'll ever be rooting for the Braves to win.

It was a nice run ...................and its funny that you seem to appreciate that the Braves didn't win the division even more so than the Mets actually winning it..............That speaks alot of Atlanta and how much you fear/dread/and respect them.

Atlanta isn't out of the playoffs yet and until they are officially you can bet your ass that N.Y. is crossing its fingers........Atlanta has always been a streaky team and if they were to get hot, well all might have been for nothing for the lowly Mets.

Here's hoping Atlanta can grab one quality starter and also shore up the Bullpen that has Always been our Achilles' this off season.

RE: That speaks alot of Atlanta and how much you fear/dread/and respect them.

hahaha, you're too funny. ummm....nope/nope/ and nope.

No fear, no dread. Maybe you missed what I said about wishing Atlanta did make the playoffs. It would be an easy series for the Mets. Atlanta had only a brief spark this season and that was it. They always choke in the playoffs, so even if by some miracle from heaven, they did make it in.... you think they could amount to anything?

Atlanta only won one series against the Mets this year, and that was right in the beginning of the season. So far this year, Atlanta 5 wins.... Mets 10 wins.

The lowly Mets as you call them.... umm, ok. The Mets have finally turned themselves around to become one of the elite teams in the league now. Here we are in mid September and the Mets still have the best record in all of baseball.

Yeah there's some respect for what Atlanta did in the 90's. 14 division wins is pretty nice. However just one championship in those 14 years isn't. Yeah, you can go on and one on how the Mets didn't make the playoffs in many of those years. However if the Mets were the division leaders they would have been expected to win year after year. Face it, Atlanta has been the biggest overrated team ever. Good in the regular season, but when it comes right down to it in the playoffs... choke city.

With what Willy Randolph and Omar Minaya have done with this team, they will be around for a long time. Locking up David Wright and Jose Reyes in a multi-year contract is the best thing they could have done. Get used to the Mets being on top.

I give you credit for still sticking by your team. All the other Braves fans have pretty much crawled back into the woodwork. I guess they will be there until they start getting good again. Which means we won't see them for a long long time.

Yeah its over. Congrats Lou. I know a lot of people were tired of seeing the Bravos every year. Of course no sports team in any sport will ever match the Braves streak! It had to end some time. Now to start watching the Mets post season collapse!!
